About. On this recording, Anne-Sophie Mutter, accompanied by pianist Lambert Orkis, shares her up-to-date thoughts on the Brahms Violin Sonatas that have been central to her repertoire from the start of her career. These sonatas are among the most intense, emotionally penetrating works composed for the violin.

Anne-Sophie Mutter (then 19 years old) is too forwardly balanced, diverting attention from the piano, which in these works bears equal importance to the violin. As a result, Alexis Weissenberg’s strong, empathetic, and sensitively contoured contributions often seem relegated to mere accompaniment, even when the piano is supposed to be in the foreground. Mutter is never overwhelmed by the power of the piano, however. She obtains a gorgeously rich, smoothly controlled tone from her instrument, managing to avoid all the unmusical sounds that a violin in lesser hands can make. The 3 Brahms sonatas are mature works, to my ears somewhat similar in overall, typically Brahmsian, feeling.

Mutter was born in the German town of Rheinfelden, which lies some 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) east of Basel on the northern bank of the High Rhine river, across which lies the Swiss town of the same name. She began playing the piano at the age of five, and shortly afterwards took up the violin.
